Mountain Skills 1 (MS1

Course duration: 18 hours - generally over 2 days

Previous experience: Some hill walking / trail walking with general fitness

Course size: This course is run on a ratio of 1 instructor to 6 students

What's included: This course includes map-reading and simple navigation techniques, recognition of natural features, distance measurement and timing of walks. Mountain hazards are also covered, as is personal equipment such as correct clothing and emergency equipment.

Course format: The majority of the time will be spent out on the hill (no matter what the weather). There are a number of topical discussions that can be presented either on the hill or through a classroom environment.

Required equipment: Basic weather proof clothing, stout walking boots with ankle support, laminated map, rucksack, hat and gloves, food and water.

Mountain Skills 2 (MS2)

Course duration: 18 hours - generally over 2 days including a couple of hours of darkness.

Previous experience: To have either already completed MS1, or to have enough previous personal experience to understand basic navigational skills. A fair fitness and willingness to walk across broken / steep ground and also learn to navigate in darkness

Course size: This course is run on a ratio of 1 instructor to 6 students

What's included: This course builds on MS1. It covers the use of a compass, route-planning and the preparation of route cards, night navigation, un-roped scrambling, mountain rescue and emergency procedures.

Course format: The majority of the time will be spent out on the hill (no matter what the weather). There are a number of topical discussions that can be presented either on the hill or through a classroom environment. There will be a 2 hour night navigation exercise at the end of the first day

Required equipment: A full range of weather proof clothing, stout walking boots with ankle support, laminated map and compass (Silva type), rucksack, hat and gloves, food and water and head torch with spare batteries.

Mountain Skills Assessment (MSA)

Assessment duration: 18 hours - generally over 2 days including a couple of hours of darkness.

Previous experience: To have either completed MS1 and MS2, hold a recoganised first aid certificate and present an official log book demonstrating a minimum of 14 quality days OR familiarise yourself with the MS syllabus, hold a recoganised first aid certificate and present an official log book demonstrating a minimum of 30 quality days.

Assessment size: This assessment is run on a ratio of 1 instructor to 4 students

What's included: This assessment will cover all the skills presented through the MS training courses. Throughout the two days you will be given personal feedback and encouraged to gain further training experience. At the end of the two days, you will be debriefed and given an official result on your skills standard.

Course format: After completing a short written test and equipment checked, you will be given a full opportunity to demonstrate your skills and knowledge through a practical mountain journey. This will include a couple of hours night time navigation at the end of the first day.

Required equipment: A full range of weather proof clothing, stout walking boots with ankle support, laminated map and compass (Silva type), rucksack, hat and gloves, food and water, head torch with spare batteries and basic emergency / first aid equipment.

Mountain Leader Training Part 1 (ML1)

Course duration: 20 hours - generally over 2 days including a few hours of darkness and a number of indoor talks.

Previous experience: To have successfully completed the MSA and registered with BOS as an ML trainee. Above average hill fitness is required and an ability to move comfortably across a mix of broken / steep ground

Course size: This course is run on a ratio of 1 instructor to 4 students.

What's included: The ML training take the personal skills that you have gained through the MS series and adds the element of looking after others in the wilderness, mountain environment. Substantial navigation skills, group leadership and a range of emergency procedures are just some of the topics that will be covered on this course.

Course format: The majority of the time will be spent out on the hill (no matter what the weather). There are a number of topical discussions that will be presented both on the hill and through a classroom environment. There will be a substantial night navigation exercise at the end of the first day.

Mountain Leader Training Part 2 (ML2)

Course duration: 30 hours - generally over 3 days including an overnight camp and a number of indoor talks.

Previous experience: To have successfully completed the ML1. Above average hill fitness is required and an ability to move comfortably across a mix of broken / steep ground with a full camping pack.

Course size: This course is run on a ratio of 1 instructor to 4 students.

What's included: The ML2 training continues to take the personal skills that you have gained through the MS series and adds the element of looking after others in the wilderness, mountain environment. Substantial navigation skills, group leadership, camp craft and a range of emergency procedures using ropes are just some of the topics that will be covered on this course.

Course format: The majority of the time will be spent out on the hill (no matter what the weather). There are a number of topical discussions that will be presented both on the hill and through a classroom environment. There will be a substantial night navigation exercise on the night of camping. On the last day after the much loved river crossing session, you will be given a full personal debrief including a where to next plan.

Required equipment: A full range of weather proof clothing, stout walking boots with ankle support, laminated map and compass (Silva type), rucksack, hat and gloves, food and water, head torch with spare batteries, walking rope and group emergency / first aid equipment. A full set of camping equipment suitable for wilderness camping in the Irish winter hills

Mountain Leader Assessment (MLA)

Assessment duration: 30 hours - generally over 3 days including 2 overnight camp and a number of night navigation's.

Previous experience: To have successfully completed the ML training. Extensive hill fitness is required and an ability to travel comfortably across a mix of broken / steep ground with a full camping pack for a number of days. There is also an extensive amount of experience that needs to be gained through a training consolidation period that must be presented in the official BOS ML log book.

Assessment size: This course is run on a ratio of 1 instructor to 4 students.

What's included: The MLA can be viewed as basically a 3 day and 2 night camping trip into the wilderness uplands of Ireland. Throughout these 3 days you will be provided with opportunities to demonstrate your knowledge and ability to lead and look after others in the mountains environment

Assessment format: The ML assessment is run completely through a practical mountain experience. Candidates are expected to be able to follow a natural mountain journey over a
3 day period whilst carrying enough provisions to be self sufficient while managing a group.

Required equipment: A full range of weather proof clothing, stout walking boots with ankle support, laminated map and compass (Silva type), rucksack, hat and gloves, food and water, head torch with spare batteries, walking rope and group emergency / first aid equipment. A full set of camping equipment suitable for wilderness camping in the Irish winter hills

Walking Group Leader Training (WGLT)

Course duration: 30 hours - generally over 3 days including night navigation's and a number of indoor talks.

Previous experience: Candidates must have registered with BOS as WGL trainees and completed a minimum of 20 quality hill walks in WGL type areas. A good level of hill fitness is required for this course and students are expected to be proficient in basic hill navigation (typically to MSA standard)

Course size: This course is run on a ratio of 1 instructor to 6 students.

What's included: The WGL training will refresh and build on the hill skills that students will already have learnt through their own experience, and then add the element of leadership. Group management, precise navigation, emergency procedures are just some of the topics covered on this 3 day training course.

Course format: The majority of the time will be spent out on the hill (no matter what the weather). There are a number of topical discussions that will be presented both on the hill and through a classroom environment. There will be substantial night navigation exercises at the end of each day.

Walking Group Leader Assessment (WGLA)

Assessment duration: 30 hours - generally over 3 days including night navigation's.

Previous experience: Candidates must have completed the BOS WGL training and completed the recommended consolidation period as demonstrated through the upkeep of the WGL log book. A good level of hill fitness is required for this course.

Assessment size: This course is run on a ratio of 1 instructor to 4 students.

What's included: The WGL assessment is run completely through a practical mountain experience. Candidates are expected to be able to implement and follow a number of natural mountain journey through out a 3 day period while managing a group.

Single Pitch Award Training (SPAT)

Course duration: 20 hours - generally over 2 days including an evening wall session

Previous experience: Candidates must have registered with BOS as SPA trainees and led a minimum of 15 recoganised climbs outdoors on leader placed protection. Candidates should be current active climbers leading a minimum of V.diff and have a keen interest in introducing others to climbing.

Course size: This course is run on a ratio of 1 instructor to 4 students.

What's included: Personal climbing skills including dealing with basic safety and emergency procedures. Structuring and promoting climbing sessions for groups and individuals. Dealing with common problem solving and emergency procedures through managing groups in the single pitch climbing environment. Climbing ethics, environmental issues and child protection is also covered.

Course format:The vast majority of time will be spent outdoors at a single pitch crag (no matter what the weather), with a evening indoor wall session organised where available. Generally the course is divided into personal climbing skills on the first day and group management skills on the second. At the end of the second day you will be given an extensive debrief and where to next plan.

Required equipment: Full outdoor clothing suitable for forecasted weather and training location. Climbing helmet, harness, shoes and basic climbing rack (ropes and extra hard wear will be supplied)

Single Pitch Award Assessment (SPAA)

Previous experience: Candidates must have completed the SPA training and required consolidation period as laid down by BOS. Experience gained during the consolidation period must be presented through the official BOS SPA logbook along with a current recoganised first aid certificate. Candidates will be expected to lead climb at a minimum standard of sever during assessment.

Assessment size: This course is run on a ratio of 1 instructor to 4 students (1:2 on second day).

What's included: Over this two day practical assessment students will be given a number of opportunities to demonstrate both their own personal skills as climbers, and their ability to safely manage group during single pitch climbing sessions. On completion of the two day assessment candidates will be given a full debrief and results including a detailed where to next plan.

Assessment format: The complete assessment will be based outdoors (no matter what the weather) at a suitable single pitch crag. Generally the assessment is divided into personal climbing skills on the first day and group management skills on the second. On the second day candidates will be given real students to manage and supervise for the day.

Required equipment: Full outdoor clothing suitable for forecasted weather and training location. Climbing helmet, harness, shoes, suitable emergency / first aid group equipment and full climbing rack (ropes can be supplied).

Previous experience: A fair level of fitness and more importantly a willingness to try something different

Course size: This course is run on a ratio of 1 instructor to 4 students.

What's included: Through this 3 hour introduction to rock climbing session, you will get the opportunity to actively experiences many of the basics of rock climbing. This would include; understanding basic climbing equipment, climbing movement skills, climbing a number of graded routes and abseiling.

Course format: This outdoor evening session runs intensely for the full 3 hours (no matter what the weather - within reason!)

Required equipment: Outdoor clothing suitable for forecasted weather and training location. All technical and specialized equipment will be supplied

Improver Rock climbing (impro-RC)

Previous experience: It is recommended that candidates should have attended an Intro to rock climbing or similar. A fair level of fitness and more importantly a willingness to push their learning, understanding and possibly their comfort zone

Course size: This course is run on a ratio of 1 instructor to 2 students.

What's included: Through this 3 hour improver rock climbing session, you will get the opportunity to actively delve deeper into the basics of rock climbing. This would include; understanding and managing basic climbing equipment, improving climbing movement skills, climbing a number of graded routes and understanding the basics of the required rope work to start becoming an independent climber.

Course format: This outdoor evening session runs intensely for the full 3 hours (no matter what the weather - within reason!)

Required equipment: Outdoor clothing suitable for forecasted weather and training location. All technical and specialized equipment will be supplied Candidates will be encouraged and advised on starting to purchase their own basic equipment.

Learn to Lead Rock climbing (L2L)

Course duration: 8 hours (one day)

Previous experience: Candidates will need to be familiar and proficient with the basics of climbing and its associated equipment. Completion of the intro course, a number of improver courses, along with a consolidation period would be a recommended minimum prior experience to attending a learn to lead course.

Course size: This course is run on a ratio of 1 instructor to 2 students.

What's included: On this full day intense course, candidates will be refreshed on all safety aspects of climbing before they are eased onto the sharp end of the rope as a lead climber. The students first lead is safely managed and followed under constant guidance nd advice by their "guardian angle" instructor.

Course format: The full day intense course is run outdoors at a user friendly crag. Although possibly weather dependant, more often than not we can push on with the day regardless. At the end of the day you will be given detailed feedback and a where to next plan.

Required equipment: Outdoor clothing suitable for forecasted weather and training location. All technical and specialized equipment can be supplied, however candidates should at least have their own; harness, helmet, rock shoes and belay plate.

Intro to Multi Pitch Rock climbing (Intro MPRC)

Course duration: 8 hours (one day)

Previous experience: Candidates will need to have some experience of climbing in a single pitch location. A fair level of fitness for the walk in to a mountain crag and a willingness to experience a high level of exposure to heights.

Course size: This course is run on a ratio of 1 instructor to 2 students.

What's included: On this full day intense course, candidates will be shown all the basic safety aspects of climbing on the more serious multi pitch crag. Climbing styles, rope management and basic emergency procedures will be just some of the topics covered. Candidates do not need to be climbing at an extreme grade.

Course format: The full day intense course is run outdoors at a user friendly multi pitch crag, most likely in the mountain environment. Although possibly weather dependant, more often than not we can push on with the day regardless.

Required equipment: Outdoor clothing suitable for forecasted weather and training location including basic hillwalking gear. All technical and specialized equipment can be supplied.

Cost: €100 per person

Classic Guided Scrambles (CScram)

Course duration: 8 hours (one day)

Previous experience: Candidates will need to have a good level of fitness and a good range of hillwalking experience. Although not essential, some rock climbing experience (intro to rock climbing) would be very beneficial.

Course size: This course is run on a ratio of 1 instructor to 2 students.

What's included: This is a full day intense course through which you will move swiftly through many types of mountain terrain. Looking at route choice, scrambling styles, mountain anchors and stances are just some of the experiences you will get.

Course format: The full day scramble will be run across some of the most dramatic terrain Ireland has to offer. Hill, mountain and climbing terrain will all be crossed in both ascent and descent.

Required equipment: Full hill walking gear will be required for this day. All technical and specialised equipment can be supplied

Cost: €100 per person

Mountain Scrambling Rope work

Previous experience: Candidates will need to have a good level of fitness and a good range of hillwalking experience. Candidates should have some previous experience of scrambling like attending the (guided) Classic Scrambles course

Course size: This course is run on a ratio of 1 instructor to 2 students.

What's included: This is a full day intense course through which you will move swiftly through many types of mountain terrain. You will be encouraged to lead yourselves and make suitable decisions under the protective guidance of your instructor throughout the day.

Course format: The full day will be run across some of the most dramatic terrain Ireland has to offer. Hill, mountain and climbing terrain will all be crossed in both ascent and descent.

Required equipment: Full hill walking gear will be required for this day. All technical and specialised equipment can be supplied however candidates should endeavor to have their own helmet and harness

Cost: €100 per person

ML Refresher Navigation (MLRef Nav)

Previous experience: Candidates will need to have either completed Mountain Leader training or assessment. This refresher course if for both candidates preparing for assessment and qualified ML's wishing to update and refresh their skills

Course size: This course is run on a ratio of 1 instructor to 6 students.

What's included: This course will be built around the needs of the attending candidates. All aspects of navigation and route finding will be covered as needed.

Course format: Generally this day starts late and finishes late so as to take advantage of a night navigation session.

Required equipment: Full ML hill walking gear will be required for this day.

Cost: €40 per person

ML Refresher Steep ground (MLRef Steep)

Previous experience: Candidates will need to have either completed Mountain Leader training or assessment. This refresher course if for both candidates preparing for assessment and qualified ML's wishing to update and refresh their skills

What's included: This course will be built around the needs of the attending candidates. All aspects of ML steep ground and route finding will be covered as needed.

Course format: This day is run through a mix of moving through the hills and set workshop style scenarios.

Required equipment: Full ML hill walking gear will be required for this day.
